Heavy oil is any type of crude oil that does not flow easily, like molasses. It is referred to as "heavy" because its density or specific gravity is higher than of light crude oil.

The standard American Petroleum Institute, API, gravity is how heavy or light a petroleum liquid is compared to water. For Heavy oil the API is less than 20°, meaning that its specific gravity is greater than 0.933.
