Breathing New Life into Old Floods

When was the last time your neglected flood had a serious review? Of the 1500 Alberta enhanced recovery schemes only a handful have a reservoir engineer who reviews the pool for sweep and opportunities every year.

In Proven’s experience, 90% of Western Canada floods can have their net asset value doubled by a thorough review.

  • Infill opportunities become obvious upon reviewing sweep patterns.
  • Under-performing patterns can have recovery boosted.
  • Failing injectors can be rejuvenated if caught early.
  • Production restriction due to equity issues can be eliminated.

Proven’s Optiflood process has proved successful in identifying $20 million of increased water flood net asset value in 90% of the pools we review.

Opportunities not only exist in enhanced recovery schemes, but many of the 1000 disposal schemes can also be optimized to improve production of offsetting wells.

At a very high level, Proven’s Optiflood process helps:

  • Pick the right injectors in the right locations
  • Inject the right amount of water in the right locations
  • Source sufficient water
  • Keep the pressure at the right level
  • Ensure the right mobility
  • Sweep the right parts of the reservoir
  • Manage the producers water cut correctly
  • Use the right facilities to manage the increased fluids
  • Manage the new operations mindset
  • Infill in the right locations

New Ideas for Your Oilsands Project

Although Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) is a very popular in-situ thermal recovery method, another technology has also has big potential.

Toe to Heel Air Injection (THAI) is a new recovery method that some operators are testing in field experimental tests. It has the advantage of requiring no steam generation but still providing high bitumen recovery.

You can see all the ERCB applications that deal with the field tests of this new technology using AppIntel software. AppIntel allows its users to data mine ERCB applications for technical information. AppIntel’s users become the most technically well versed engineers in the oil industry.

Presidential Spotlight

Granger J. Low is the president of Proven Reserves and its principal engineer since 1999.

Granger was born and raised here in Calgary. He has a Master of Engineering degree from the University of Calgary where his thesis was titled 'A New Method of Deconvolution Unmasks Reservoir Pressure Response of Varying Rate Drawdown Test.' He has worked for over 30 years in the oil and gas industry, and has worked on projects all over the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. At the beginning of his career, he worked four years in the field in Rainbow Lake. His work specialties include pressure transient analysis, reservoir exploitation, and petroleum economics.

Recently, Granger has been actively involved in perfecting reservoir engineering software solutions for commercial release, the first of which - AppIntel - allows users to easily search and study applications from all over Alberta.

Granger enjoys serving in the community when he’s not at work. He has served as the CEO of a local charity, and as a scout leader with Scouts Canada. He also enjoys waterskiing and playing chess with his five sons.

Thanks, Granger!
