New AER Group Scrutinizing Well Head Pressures



Need a new water flood, or need to change an old one? It’s likely your approval will hit a road block on maximum well head injection pressure approval.

A big change in how the AER regulates injector well pressure is affecting application approval time.

Reacting to recent bitumen release to surface events, the AER is revamping the way it approves injection pressures.

Inside the AER, a new sub department has been set up to review well head injection pressure requests. The new department is very careful about pressure requests. Their reviews take much longer than the previous department. The information they require for such a request has significantly increased.

The new effort is described as “changing the tires while the car is still moving” and it’s creating some difficult steering conditions. Some applications are falling off the road to approval.

Prepare for slower application processing. Working with the requirements of this new group can be frustrating while they continue to evolve their review criteria.
